About the Lakes:
Lake Fork: If there is a bass lake in Heaven, I can’t imagine how it could be much better than this East Texas jewel. As a result of trophy fishing management practices, Lake Fork has produced almost 70% of the Top 50 largest bass ever caught in Texas and is the undisputed Big Bass Capital of Texas. Encompassing over 27,000 acres, 300+ miles of shoreline, and dozens of protected coves, big bass are caught every day of the year. With only navigation channels cut in the native timber during construction, fertile water, and gentle rolling terrain; Lake Fork is a cover and structure fisherman’s dream, including a tremendous amount of flooded timber, hydrilla and milfoil, lily pads and cattails, humps, points, and roadbeds to fish. In addition to big bass, Fork also is very popular for its slab-sized crappie and its large catfish population.  Lake Fork is 70 miles east of Dallas.

Lake Monticello: This 2,000 acre power plant hot water discharge lake once held the Texas state largemouth bass record. Now, with its 14”-24” protective slot limit for bass and its year-round warm water, Monticello is chockfull of 4 to 9 pound bass. Bass pre-spawn starts here in November with spawning fish from December to early March. Due to the warm water, fishing is good at Monticello even after major winter cold fronts.  Monticello is about 30 miles East of Fork, just southeast of Mount Vernon.

Timing:
The weather on Lake Fork is fishable year round.
Bass spawn at Lake Fork in February-early May and this is the busiest time of the year. May-August offers excellent topwater and structure fishing. Bass school in September and October, offering fast action. In November-January, big fish at Fork group up in deep water while starting to stage for pre-spawn, while bass start spawning at Lake Monticello. Monticello offers consistent numbers of good quality fish in the winter, while Fork gives you a better chance for a true trophy bass.
